Proving the Impossible

Sudden Sandwich SOLVED!

by Jesse Gernigin

This effect is nothing new. Bernard Bilis has this effect in the first volume of Apocalypse, his method envolved a false take of one sandwich card as two while secretly controlling the named card under the reversed (and hidden/retained) sandwich card in the deck. Then he would palm the two of them on top of the one but apparently two cards then reveal.

The method is bold and def. fun, but my problem is when I tried it on my friends there would always be someone in the group who claimed it was already there and I just guessed (says a lot for my technique, but not much for the trick). I thought about the effect for a while and then put away the solution, your challenge woke me back up, here we go.

Solution 1-First of all let's make this more powerful (I know, sounds hard but stick with me). To get set up first do Jennings General Card sandwich placement, the one were you secretly load one of the two sandwich cards under the top card and then place one (but apparently two) cards off to the side. Have a card named, pull it out and put it on top (unless of course it
is the top card with your sandwich card under it. If that's the case put the other king on top, snap, reveal miracle) but if your not so lucky, find the card and lay it on the table (you could of course have it signed).

Triple undercut the top three cards to the bottom, this should bring the face up card second from the bottom. Perform a quick ambitious type card routine with their card, nothing big (of course it could be big and you could comment that the kings are the big finish and play that patter theme "it gets bigger because it becomes more amazing, but eventually the only way
to get bigger than amazing is to get impossible, and you think its amazing that it keeps jumping to the top, but it is actually impossible because it's never been in the deck for its always been trapped between the two kings) and then put the card on the table and condition the audience for the last part. While talking either bottom palm and replace that card on top, or just double undercut the bottom card to the top, either way you bring the face up sandwich card to the bottom. Do the cull control bringing their card to the bottom, under the sandwich card, while it still appears to stick from the center of the deck. Now comes the time to load the card, if
you've conditioned the audience, paced the effect correctly and have remained relaxed and aloof to the tabled card (sandwich card) then you should be set for an ending that will have people reacting the way the ads promise reactions.

At this point two methods have to be described. The first method will focus on having space on the table, the second will only require the space of the card case.

1st-Bottom cop the two cards, the selection followed by the face up sandwich card. Pull them away and casually deposit them on top of the tabled sandwich card while ribbon spreaing the deck. If done casually this will fly by. Reveal

2nd-This one is a bit harder, but the payoff is still good. The first method allows you to be sloppy, the second doesn't, in fact it will scare away a good chunk of people and probably pilfer my chances of winning this in lieu of easier methods such as having duplicate sets of jokers to load, but I stick by these methods as the best because they casually reinforce what's happening instead of beating the spectators brains out while allowing you to play the audience and not get trapped in the *i'm a magician robot mode* where you have to get from point a to point b and the audience knows it (something often seen in amateurs and hobbyists who don't perform for
laymen a lot) which, in my opinion, subconciously warns the spectators that something is going to happen, and not in a positive Juan Tamariz Five Points in Magic hinting way.

*falls off soapbox, dusts self off*

-Sorry, got carried away. Anyway the set-up should be, selection on bottom, sandwich card above that, deck face down with odd card sticking out (people should think outjogged card is theirs, don't say mention that though). Have them push card flush as you get a right hand thumb break on the bottom two cards. Lateral palm the bottom two, hold lateral palm hand still for half a beat while handing the deck to the spectator to hold. As soon as their hand moves towards the deck relax (don't drop or dive it) down onto the card case where the other sandwich card is waiting with a grin to take the credit for an amazing ending. Square the now three cards up, this is easy because the case guides your fingers so you don't have to go fast, fumble, or draw any
concious attention to it. So now the card is loaded, the deck is held, your clean, time to choose your ending. The best in my opinion is to have someone pick up the card case. Two things can happen there, either the cards will spread and reveal the selection, play that effect as (O, I
totally forgot to show you why this trick with the deck is impossible, thats because your card was never in the deck). Or my favorite method, the cards don't spread. If the gods bless you with this have them hold the box up and have the spectator with the deck hold the deck level with the box but a foot or so away. Have them blow on the deck (actually on top) and the air
current will ride on and over the deck to where the boxed cards are and slowly spread them revealing last card (play that effect however you want).
